INTEGRATED SUPPORT - AMBER ACTIVE
SPORTS CAN BE FUN
In all areas of Amber Support we believe integrated support and liaising with local organisations in order to share experiences is a valuable way of ensuring that those involved gain a better appreciation of each other and greater understanding of people’s ‘abilities’ as opposed to ‘dis’ abilities.
You only have to look at the annual Paralympic Games to see examples that demonstrate what individuals with disabilities can achieve when opportunities are provided.
It was this belief, as well as the Paralympic Legacy, that prompted Gary Ives, our Day Service Manager to set up Amber Active; a club designed to recognise that with the right support and equipment physical activity is available to all.
Since its inception three years ago Amber Active has gone from strength to strength with the assistance of the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire and now operates over a number of days. We were recently invited to talk at Heart of Worcestershire College over at their Redditch Campus to the students studying for their BTEC Level 3 Sport and Exercise Sciences QCF Course.
Dale, a client of ours who attends Amber Active, gave a talk about sports from his perspective which provided a valuable insight to the students as to the value that sports brings to the lives of people with disabilities. He talked about how it made him feel more in control of himself and his life and how with the right encouragement he actually found keeping fit fun!
A number of questions were posed to Dale and Gary which clearly identified that this had generated a new avenue of thought. Finally before Dale left he had his photo taken with the bike display in the Redditch Campus Reception – we think he enjoyed this bit the most!
